Une porte monumentale en marbre, haute de 28 m en couronne l\u2019entr\u00e9e. En 1851, cette porte est d\u00e9molie pour pouvoir faire entrer les navires propuls\u00e9s par des roues \u00e0 aubes. Enfin, en 1888, le bassin est agrandi aux dimensions actuelles. Apr\u00e8s avoir accueilli la flotte fran\u00e7aise de torpilleurs mouill\u00e9s \u00e0 Villefranche il est utilis\u00e9 pendant cinquante ans par le chantier naval Voisin pour le car\u00e9nage des yachts de plaisance.
